Upholstery
These were a pair of matching, round armchairs that I completely reupholstered.
I removed the old material, stuffing and tacks but kept the original springs as they were in good condition. I used jute webbing and hessian on the back and hessian sewed to the springs. I layered the chair in coir, wadding and batting for padding before covering. The chair was covered in three machine-sewn panels: front, back and seat, for each I made and added piping. The front and seat panels were stapled on. For the back I hand-sewed using an upholstery needle. For the arm faces, I cut thin wooden plates which I covered with wadding and material before screwing on. Finally, I made piped cushions for each and replaced the wheels and dust cover underneath.
This was a small armchair that had a spring rocking base which I fixed and reupholstered.
For this chair, I removed all the old material, webbing, stuffing and tacks. I sanded down and painted the wooden arms and base. I fixed the base by making new dowels and regluing. Instead of springs, this chair had rubber webbing which I replaced with elastic webbing, which I cut and added Pirelli clips to. I then covered the wooden sides in material. For the front, I layered hessian, batting and wadding before stapling material to cover. I also made piping which I attached around the edge before hand-sewing the back panel. I then created a dust cover and reattached the base. Finally, I sewed a seat cushion cover, including piping and zip, which I stuffed with a piece of foam in a stockinette and I also made a pillow for decoration.
